HOPPIN' JOHN

If you were to ask any South Carolinian what's on the menu for New Year's Day, the answer would be an unequivocal 'Why, Hoppin' John and collard greens, of course!' like you've just fallen off the turnip truck because certainly everyone from everywhere knows that, but in reality, not so much, just don't tell them that! The origin of our New Year's dish of beans and rice, a.k.a. "Hoppin' John", has a beginning that is slightly less clear. Some say an old, hobbled man called Hoppin’ John became known for selling peas and rice on the streets of Charleston, South Carolina and others say slave children hopped around the table in eager anticipation of the dish. We're more inclined to believe the former, so here's to blue skies above your Charleston streets, John, may you make your fortune in the afterlife!
